Frequently Asked Questions
How does Laser work ?
Lasers emit energy in the form of light; it targets and heats up the hair follicle. Laser light is attracted to and absorbed by melanin, the pigment in the hair. The heat travels down the hair and destroys the root and interconnectors connecting it to the blood supply; preventing the growth of more hair. It only affects the specific structures of the hair and follicle, leaving the surrounding tissue undamaged.
Why do I need a course of treatments?
You need a course of treatments because laser only works on hair that is in the growth phase of the hair cycle, called Anagen. The other two phases of the hair cycle, called Catagen and Telogen, mean the hair is either dormant or falling out; so laser doesn’t impact it. As all of your hair is in different phases at different times, you need several treatments spread out over a number of weeks to ensure the laser ‘catches’ the each of the hairs in their growth phase at some point.
How many treatments will I need?
It depends on the area being treated; how thick and dense the hair is and your skin type – it varies from person to person. You’ll need at least four-six treatments and it will also depend on how often you come back for your sessions. Coarse, thick hair such as that on a man’s chest will take longer to treat than fine hair, but your initial consultation with an experienced therapist will give you an idea of what to expect. It only affects the specific structures of the hair and follicle, leaving the surrounding tissue undamaged.
Does Laser Hair Removal hurt?
As with all treatments, it depends on the person and how sensitive they are, as well as the area being treated. We use Soprano ICE Platinum, which has an additional cooling device to decrease sensitivity during treatment. The sensation is like an elastic band being snapped against your skin, and the laser is moving all the time so the sensation is well-tolerated by most people.
What is the difference between IPL and laser?
Lasers are most selective and more effective at absorbing into melanin meaning fewer treatments are required. They penetrate deeper to specifically target hair structures; whereas IPLs typically do not. Lasers have more advanced cooling systems, which means your treatments are made as comfortable as possible for you.
How long do I leave between treatment sessions?
It varies on your rate of regrowth, which is different with everyone. Initially a four to six week gap (depending on the area being treated) will be recommended and then your Therapie Clinic therapist can assess the rate of hair regrowth, extending the gaps between sessions as appropriate.
Some people may require a maintenance top-up treatment once or twice a year; some people find the hair doesn’t grow back at all.
What do I have to do after treatment?
Your skin will be sensitive so you’re advised to refrain from hot showers/baths, steam rooms, saunas, swimming pool and exercise for 24-48hrs. Don’t use sun beds on the area or expose the area to direct sunlight at all while having laser. Don’t use perfumed products or thick creams for 48hrs. Don’t wear tight clothes like skinny jeans or nylon tights (if having your legs treated) for 48hrs, as they may cause friction and aggravate recently treated skin. All of the above may cause skin to become irritated in the treated area, it is important that you follow these guidelines to ensure your skin safety. Your therapist will give you further details.
Is the laser treatment safe?
Laser is a clinically tested treatment; FDA approved and has undergone rigorous trails to ensure patient safety and efficacy. All of the Therapie Clinic laser therapists are highly trained in performing the treatments; we take client comfort and safety very seriously and use the highest grade medical lasers. Before starting a course of treatment, we give each client a free consultation and patch test with a 3 day waiting period to ensure skin is safe and patch test is clear. If you are having treatments with us and happen to go on holiday throughout your treatment course we will ask that you will have another patch test when you return to ensure your skin is ready to resume treatment without the risk of pigmentation occurring.
Waxing and Shaving Before, During or After Laser Hair RemovalBefore you begin
You need to shave the day before treatment; not the day of, as shaving exfoliates the skin a bit and makes it sensitive, making laser treatment uncomfortable.
Don’t wax as if you remove hair, the laser has nothing to target!During the course of treatment
You may shave between sessions – do not wax as it will affect hair growth patterns and affect results. Waxing or plucking completely removes the hair from the follicle, and for the laser to work there needs to be a hair present in the follicle.
If you have waxed or plucked the treatment area you would have to wait 6-8 weeks for follicles to produce a new hair. After the laser course is finished
We’d recommend you continue using laser until you achieve the level of hair reduction you’re happy with. Any remaining or reoccurring hair will be minimal; very fine in texture and light in colour.
Why do Therapie Clinic give a free consultation? It’s important for us to provide an assessment of your general medical condition; hair and skin to ensure you’re suitable for laser hair removal. Lasers don’t work well on blonde, red or grey hair as there may not be enough pigment for the laser to ‘find’ the follicle in order to work effectively. We can answer any questions you have regarding the treatment; make sure you have all the relevant information you need to make an informed decision and understand how the laser works. We also perform a patch test which allows us to test your skin for any sensitivity from the laser and also will ensure you are a suitable candidate for treatment. There are a number of different factors that determine the final result, including skin and hair colour; diameter of the hair, intervals between treatments and any underlying medical issues such as PCOS.
